Egypt Assesses Troop Deployment to AU Mission in Somalia

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s army chief, Major General Mohamed Godax Barre has received a 16-member Egyptian military delegation in Mogadishu as Cairo prepares to send troops to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The team, led by Major General Islam Radwan, held talks with AUSSOM officials including head of mission Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene and was briefed on the security situation at the force’s headquarters.

Egypt’s delegation is expected to visit military facilities in Mogadishu and beyond to review logistics, training and deployment plans for the incoming contingent.

AUSSOM, which replaced the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) last year, supports Somali forces in countering al Shabaab militants and stabilising the country.
