USA, Egypt Condemn Attack against Foreign Military Trainers in Mogadishu

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Egypt and the United States have condemned the attack that killed United Arab Emirates military trainers and Somali soldiers in Mogadishu.

The attack which targeted troops at the General Gordon military base also led to the injuries of three officers from Bahrain Defense Force and Somalia National Army (SNA).

The deaths, which were confirmed by the UAE Ministry of Defense, happened after a Somali army recruit discharged his gun targeting the soldiers inside the military facility.

The UAE soldiers were on a training mission of the Somali National Army as part of bilateral agreement between the UAE and Somalia.

In a statement on the X platform, the United States condemned the attack and vowed to continue support of Somali efforts to build peace.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives in yesterday’s deplorable terrorist attack against UAE military trainers and Somali soldiers valiantly working to advance the nation’s stability. We condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms and remain steadfast in our support of Somali efforts to build peace,” the US said in a post on the X platform.

Egypt Foreign Affairs Ministry also affirmed its full support and solidarity with Somalia against terrorism and extremism and called on the international efforts to eradicate terrorism and cut off its funding.

Al-Shabab, which has been fighting the government for more than two decades, claimed responsibility for the attack.
