Egypt’s President Pardons 6 Persons, Including Egyptian-British Activist

CAIRO, Xinhua: Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi pardoned six persons including Egyptian-British activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, Egypt’s Al Qahera News reported on Monday.

Abdel Fattah was sentenced to five years in prison in 2021 for “spreading false news.” Before his sentencing, he had spent two years in pre-trial detention.

Al-Sisi earlier this month ordered relevant authorities to study an appeal submitted by the state-affiliated National Council for Human Rights calling for the release of Abdel Fattah along with other convicted individuals.

The council said it had received repeated petitions from families of the convicted people and reviewed their “humanitarian and health conditions” before making the appeal.
