Egypt’s Sisi, EU’s Borrell Discuss Gaza Crisis
CAIRO, (Xinhua) – Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, discussed on Monday the situation in the Gaza Strip and its regional impacts, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.
During the meeting, Sisi and Borrell addressed Egypt’s intensive efforts to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of detainees and hostages, the statement said.
A Gaza ceasefire will pave the way for the two-state solution, which will help in opening space for peace, coexistence, stability, and development in the region, the statement added.
The Egyptian president warned of the dangers of continuous escalation that would further expand the conflict, it said.
He called on the international community and the EU to step up efforts to reach a truce deal in the Gaza Strip and stop the violence in the West Bank, which will ease regional tensions and restore peace and security.
For his part, Borrell praised Egypt’s pivotal role in promoting regional stability and emphasized the EU’s keenness in maintaining continuous consultation with Egypt during this critical time.
Borrell’s official visit is part of a tour to Egypt and Lebanon, including a stop at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.
