Elections Commission Says 300 Polling Stations So Far Identified Countrywide
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission said Monday it had identified 300 stations where voters will cast their vote in upcoming presidential and local government elections.
INEBC chairman Abdikarin Hassan said in a presser in Mogadishu that the commission had marked 300 polling stations but was hoping to look out for more to reach at least 800.
These areas are located in relatively stable areas where the government controls. Hassan added that 110 political organisations have since been registered. Registration opened today and will end on March 31.
Somalia plans to hold the first universal elections in over 50 years based on the newly enacted Elections Law.
According to an agreement between the Federal Government and a section of Federal Member State leaders in October, election of presidents at regional level and district council elections will take place between June and September this year.
A new president will be elected early next year when the term of the current president lapses.
