Ethiopian and Eritrean foreign ministers arrive in Mogadishu

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Workneh Gebeyehu and his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh Wednesday arrived in Mogadishu in an ongoing detente in the Horn of African region.

Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad received the ministers at Aden Adde Airport in Mogadishu as security forces locked down major city roads.

It was not immediately clear what the agenda of the visit was but leaders of Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia have in the last three months made far reaching statements and agreements aimed at fully restoring relations which remained frozen for close to four decades.

The visit follows President Mohamed Farmaajo’s visit to Asmara late July.

Ethiopian Airlines announced Tuesday it would resume flights to Mogadishu starting November 2 ending a 40 year hiatus since the airline billed as the most profitable in the continent wound up flights to Mogadishu.

Both Ethiopia and Eritrea have re-opened embassies in each other’s capitals. Somalia and Eritrea have also pledged to re-open embassies in Mogadishu and Asmara.

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) of Ethiopia yesterday unanimously approved a draft law prepared to restructure executive organs and new cabinet nominated by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
