Ethiopian PM appoints new police Commissioner after deadly bomb attack

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday appointed new police chiefs for Addis Ababa city after a deadly bomb attack left the nation in shock, reported state media outlet Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation.

The bomb attack at a mass rally held on Saturday to support the reform program of Ethiopian Prime Minister left two people dead and around 156 people injured.

Major General Degefe Bede has been appointed as the new Addis Ababa city Police Commissioner, while Hassan Negash and Zelalem Mengiste have been appointed as the city’s deputy police commissioners.

The security reshuffle has also seen the arrest of nine senior police officials including Girma Kassa, the Ex-Deputy Head of Addis Ababa Police Commission accused of failing to prevent the bomb attack.

The mass rally, which was held in Addis Ababa and other major cities across the East African country, was organized to give credit to the various activities by Ahmed’s administration.

Ahmed, who took the prime minister position in April this year, has made various decisions that mainly aimed to bring about peace and unity among ethnic groups in the country.
