EU Hands Over Somalia Training Mission Command as Support to National Forces Deepens

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s security sector received has renewed boost as the European Union appointed Brigadier General Marco Manzone to lead its military training mission in Mogadishu, a program central to rebuilding the country’s armed forces.
The ceremony, held at the EU’s International Campus in Mogadishu, marked the handover from outgoing commander Brigadier General Giuseppe Zizzari and was attended by senior Somali officials, including Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, and international partners.
The EU Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S), launched in 2010, has played a key role in shaping the Somali National Army by providing structured military training, strategic advice, and institutional support. Over the years, it has helped lay the groundwork for a more professional and self-reliant Somali force amid ongoing security challenges.
“EUTM-S remains an important pillar in strengthening Somalia’s sovereignty and national stability,” said Minister Fiqi during the event. “This partnership supports our path toward full security ownership.”
General Zizzari, who was awarded the EU’s CSDP Medal for his service, said the mission’s impact extended beyond training. “Our cooperation with Somali authorities has contributed to long-term institutional resilience,” he noted in his farewell remarks.
Incoming commander Manzone pledged to continue aligning the mission with Somalia’s evolving priorities. “We are committed to working hand-in-hand with Somali forces to promote stability and peace,” he said.
With contributions from over a dozen European countries, EUTM-S has trained thousands of Somali soldiers and officers. Its continued presence is viewed as critical as Somalia prepares for greater security responsibility following the phased withdrawal of African Union forces.
