EU Mission Wraps Up Military Training in Somalia, Boosting Army Readiness

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S) has concluded a series of specialized military training courses aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Somali National Army (SNA).
A total of five intensive courses were completed at the General Dhagabadan Training Center in Mogadishu, where Somali troops received instruction in shooting, ammunition management, and mission planning at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels.
The training, which ended on May 25, is seen as a key step toward enhancing the operational readiness of Somali forces as the country continues to confront security threats from al-Shabaab and works to build sustainable peace.
EUTM-S Mission Force Commander Brigadier General Giuseppe Zizzari praised the soldiers for their dedication during the closing ceremony, saying the skills acquired would significantly contribute to the army’s effectiveness.
“This training marks a vital investment in Somalia’s stability,” Zizzari said. “The professionalism and discipline shown by these soldiers are encouraging signs for the future of the Somali National Army.”
Senior officials in attendance included EUCAP’s Chief of Staff Brian Richard, Somali TRADOC Commander Colonel Ahmed Essa Ahmed, and GDTC Commander Lieutenant Colonel Muhudiin Ahmed Mohamud.
The trainees are expected to take on key roles within the military, helping to reinforce command structures, improve planning capabilities, and enhance overall battlefield performance.
EUTM-S, which has operated in Somalia since 2010, continues to support the SNA and the Ministry of Defence under its “three-pillar approach” of training, mentoring, and advising. The mission aims to help establish a self-sufficient and professional national defense force.
The EU remains one of Somalia’s principal security partners as the country prepares for the gradual handover of security responsibilities from international forces to Somali-led institutions.
