EU pledges continued support in reconstruction of Somalia

The European Union has pledged to further support Somalia in its reconstruction through financing on key sectors of the economy such as infrastructural development, security and development of political institutions.

Speaking in the sidelines of the Global Development Financing Summit with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Ethiopia, EU or International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica said the EU was committed to the implementation of development projects in Somalia as set out its development agenda.

”The EU is focused on its pledge towards the reconstruction of Somalia. We have implemented a number of projects and we are committed to ensuring the same is followed to the end.” said Mimica.

On his part, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud briefed the delegates on the rebuilding process in Somalia  and projects implemented by EU in Somalia, security and the country’s political arena calling on them to be steadfast on their continued support for Somalia.

“We are grateful for  the European Union support in various aspects.  As we are now recovering from the wounds of the civil war, we urge the EU to further support us in rebuilding our infrastructure, the army  and job creation opportunities for our young people.

President Mohamud also met with Swedish Prime Minister  Kjell Stefan Löfvén with whom they discussed development programmes which Sweden plans to implement in Somalia and bilateral relations between the two countries.

The meeting was also attended Somali ministers for foreign affairs, Abdisalan Hadliye Omar and his Petroleum and Mineral Resources  resources counterpart  Mohamed Mukhtar Ibrahim among other Somali officials.

Ethiopia is hosting a high-level conference which is to aimed at establishing a global fund to support health programs for women and children. The conference is set to launch the Global Financing Facility in Support of Every Woman and Every Child.
