EU Underscores Need to Respect Somalia’s Sovereignty

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The European Union has stressed the importance of preserving the independence, sovereignty and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Speaking during a meeting with the Federal Republic of Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the Villa Somalia, Mogadishu, EU special envoy in charge of the Horn of Africa Annette Weber stated the need to maintain peace and stability in the region.

She also emphasized that the European Union was keen to ensure that the Horn of Africa region remains stable and was keenly monitoring the actions taken by Ethiopia which entered naval deal with Somaliland on January 1st.

President Mohamud on his part thanked the European Union for its support by stressing the need to respect the independence, sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Somalia.

On Wednesday, president Mohamud held another meeting with the United Nation’s Secretary General António Guterres where they discussed the current situation in the region and the aggressive moves exhibited by Ethiopia against Somalia.

The president stated that the vision and policy of the federal government of Somalia is based on good relations with neighboring states, cooperation and mutual respect and that the people of Somalia will not accept any acts that violates their unity.
