EU Urges Ethiopia to Respect Somalia’s Territorial Integrity Following Naval Base ‘Pact’

GOOBJOOG NEWS|BRUSSELS: The European Union has called for the respect of Somalia’s territorial integrity it apparent lash-out at Ethiopia following its signing of an agreement with the break-away region of Somaliland.

“The European Union would like to remind the importance of respecting the unity, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia pursuant of its constitution, the Charters of the African Union and the United Nations,” the statement from the EU spokesperson read in part.

It noted that this was  ‘key for the peace and stability of the entire Horn of Africa region.’

The remarks from the EU, which is a major supporter to Somalia, is one of the foremost reactions from the global community to what Somalia has termed ‘naked aggression’ from Ethiopia.

On Tuesday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud warned Ethiopia and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed against interfering with Somalia’s territorial integrity and urged them to walk back from the agreement.

The Council of Ministers also condemned the MoU as illegal and recalled the country’s ambassador to Ethiopia for ‘consultations.’
