Ex-President Calls For Urgent Support To Floods Stricken Families In Afgooye.
Former President Shariff Sheikh Ahmed has called on the government and Somalis of goodwill to assist floods stricken families in Afgooye district and surrounding areas.
Addressing journalists on the ongoing floods, the former head of state said there was urgent need to support the affected populations to avert more suffering. Ahmed who is also the Forum for National Parties (FNP) leader said his coalition was joining hands in spearheading the relief efforts.
“As you are aware, the FNP was closely following the floods repercussions on the two regions especially Afgoye district and the surrounding villages,” said Ahmed. “We’ve been told that in Afgoye people cannot go and pray in Mosques because of water that has restricted the movement.”
The former head of state urged the Federal Government and Federal Member States to move in and provide the much needed support.
He also urged Somalis who have the means to help their less fortunate families in providing relief supplies.
The UN humanitarian agency OCHA said Sunday over 90,000 people had been affected by the ongoing floods. It added that over 20,000 hectares of farmland had been inundated by floods in Middle and Lower Shabelle and Jubbaland.
