GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Opposition presidential candidates, most of whom were based in Jazeera area near the airport in Mogadishu are relocating their bases to their respective clan strongholds amid growing tensions in the city even as militias spring up across Mogadishu.

Former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed left for Abdiaziz district in northern Mogadishu Tuesday to join his successor Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who also moved there last week.

Goobjoog News has also learnt former prime minister Hassan Khaire and Wadajir party leader Abdirahman Abshishakur are planning to relocate to Hodan and Daynile districts.

The relocations come amid tensions in the city following the extension of Mohamed Farmaajo’s term in office for two more years. Farmaajo returned to Mogadishu Tuesday from the Democratic Republic of Congo where he sought continental support for his illegitimate and illegal stay in office.

Militias have been massing up in the city in recent days as fears of a possible clash with government forces increase.

Despite demands by the international community for a return to talks, Farmaajo has remained adamant and is instead seeking legitimacy from the continent after major western donors rejected his bid.

Speakers at the UN Security Council Tuesday poured cold water on the extension bid calling for an ‘urgent’ return to talks.
