Farmaajo a ‘national criminal’ opposition says as FGS refutes violence accusations

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somali Government and opposition groups have once again traded accusations over the confrontations in Mogadishu Friday that saw government forces fire live bullets at protesters.
In separate statements today, the opposition pointed fingers at outgoing President Mohamed Farmaajo terming him a ‘national criminal’. “The Council considers the outgoing President to be a national criminal, in no way part of the solution to the political crisis, and not to participate in elections under the National Provisional Constitution,” the Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC) said in a statement.
It added that Farmaajo will be held accountable for the ‘crimes’ against the opposition and the Somali people.
But in a sharp rejoinder, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed fingers at the opposition for ‘destabilising the country’.
“Rather than supporting the finalization of the outstanding issues on the implementation of the political agreement of 17 September the prospective presidential candidates chose to instigate chaos,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a tweet.
A group of opposition supporters led by Wadajir party leader Abdirahman Abdishakur and former Prime Minister Hassan Khaire came under live fire from government forces within the Sahal terminal along airport road Friday forcing them to scamper for safety.
Khaire later told journalists his former boss Farmaajo intended to assassinate him and Abdishakur.
