Fears over Al-shabaab attack as Ethiopian forces withdraw from military bases in central Somalia
Ethiopian troops who have been fighting Al-Shabaab fighters in south and central Somalia have vacated a number of military bases Galgaduud region, sparking fears of the group’s resurgence and a possible setback for African Union efforts to stabilize the country.
On Sunday, Ethiopian troops vacated their posts in El-lahelay localityof Galgaduud region which was seized from Al-Shabaab some two year ago.
Residents are reporting that the troops stationed there have withdrawn overnight.
Troops could be seen leaving the town in convoys and even evacuating their stationary heavy equipment.
Locals say the Somali military in the area may not be able to defend the area from Al-Shabaab attacks.
The troops within the AMISOM Mission in Somalia also vacated several other military bases including Dhusamareeb and El-buur towns without informing the local administration.
Some officials and Somali military officer made a similar statement, saying they only learned of the withdrawal when they saw the troops pulling down their tents.
Ethiopian troops were merged into AMISOM in January 2014.
Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti and Burundi are the other troop contributing countries.
