Federal Government confident of maintaining security after ATMIS drawdown

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has said it is fully committed to ensuring a seamless transition of security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the Somali National Army.

In a statement issued at a time when the ATMIS forces have concluded its drawdown of 2000 troops from Somalia, the federal government said the Somali forces will take over security responsibilities and ensure the country remains safe.

The Federal Government added that its forces are prepared to take over full responsibilities from the African Union forces which are scheduled to hand over all responsibilities to Somali forces by December 2024.

The government further expressed its gratitude to the ATMIS forces for the sacrifices they have made over the years in helping in the fight against the Al-Shabaab militants and securing liberated areas.

ATMIS completed its drawdown in five sectors in line with the United Nations Security Council resolutions 2628 (2022) and 2670 (2023).
