GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia is stepping up security measures at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu while accelerating plans to clear designated facilities near the airport as part of efforts to improve aviation safety and strengthen coordination among security agencies.

Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag) inspected the airport and chaired the fifth coordination meeting involving institutions responsible for security and operations at the facility.

The discussions focused on improving cooperation among government agencies, strengthening passenger safety, enhancing airport services and advancing plans to relocate or demolish designated structures near the airport.

Fartaag stressed the importance of maintaining strict security standards at the country’s main international aviation gateway, describing the airport as a vital entry point and an important symbol of Somalia’s international connectivity.

He urged security and aviation authorities to improve coordination and ensure that passengers and airport operations remain protected.

Aden Adde International Airport serves as Somalia’s principal international airport, handling diplomatic missions, commercial flights, humanitarian operations and other essential travel.

Its strategic importance has made security a longstanding priority, particularly as Mogadishu continues to face threats from Al-Shabaab despite improvements in security across parts of the capital.

The planned clearance of facilities near the airport is part of ongoing efforts to improve the surrounding environment and address operational and security concerns.

However, authorities have not disclosed the number of structures affected, the specific areas targeted or the timeline for the proposed relocation and demolition exercise.

The inspection was also attended by the State Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation and other senior officials.

The latest measures reflect continued efforts by Somali authorities to strengthen aviation security, improve airport management and maintain safe operations at one of the country’s most critical transport facilities.
