Federal Government Warns Traders Importing Low-Quality Seeds to Somalia
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Agriculture minister Mohamed A. Hayir has issued a stern warning to the traders who import low-standard seeds to the country.
The minister who spoke during a farmers’ association meeting in Mogadishu Sunday said that the government will take legal action against such traders.
“The government will not tolerate practices that jeopardize the livelihood of Somali farmers or the quality of our produce,” he stated.
This comes a few days after the Ministry launched the first-ever agricultural lab in Mogadishu to advance soil testing, pest control, irrigation quality and food safety paving the way for Somali produce in global markets.
The Somali parliament has already passed two critical bills to further strengthen the sector including; the Bill on the Control of Chemicals in Agriculture and the Bill on the Service and Inspection of Agriculture.
These laws aim to regulate chemical use in farming and improve agricultural services through rigorous inspections, ensuring safer, more sustainable practices.
The approval of the laws by parliament is aimed at positioning Somalia for significant growth in agriculture, a vital sector for its economy and food security.
