FIFA President Expected To Visit Somalia in Landmark Trip, Football Officials Say

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia is preparing to host FIFA President Gianni Infantino later this year in what football officials say would be the first visit by the head of world football’s governing body to the country, underscoring growing international engagement with Somali football.

The president of the Somali Football Federation (SFF), Ali Abdi Mohamed, popularly known as Ali Shiine, said the planned visit followed discussions he held with Infantino during a series of meetings in the United States.

If it takes place as scheduled, the visit would mark a significant milestone for Somali football, which has been rebuilding after decades of conflict that damaged sports infrastructure and disrupted domestic competitions.

Ali Shiine, who also serves as vice-president of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), said the expected visit reflected FIFA’s growing confidence in the progress made by Somali football and the country’s efforts to strengthen its sporting institutions.

He attributed the development to closer cooperation between the Somali Football Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, saying the partnership had helped deepen ties with FIFA in recent years.

According to the federation, the anticipated visit could pave the way for expanded cooperation with FIFA, including support for upgrading football stadiums, training coaches and referees, developing youth football and strengthening women’s football programmes.

FIFA has increased its investment in football development across Africa through infrastructure projects, technical assistance and governance reforms. Somalia has been among the countries seeking greater support to rebuild its football sector, improve facilities and expand opportunities for young players after years of instability.

Neither FIFA nor the Somali Football Federation has announced an official date for the visit, but football officials said preparations were under way ahead of the expected trip later this year.
