Fighting erupts after Al-Shabaab attacks Ugandan military base in Lower Shabelle

GOOBJOOG NEWS|KISMAYO: A fierce battle has broken out this morning between Ugandan forces operating under ATMIS and Al-Shabaab fighters in Golweyn area, Buulo-Mareer district in the Lower Shabelle region.

Fighting erupted after members of Al-Shabaab launched a heavy attack on a Ugandan military base in Golweyn area with an array of weapons.

Witnesses said they could hear the sound of gunfire from both sides, although they were not sure whether there were any casualties.

ATMIS has not yet commented on the recent Al-Shabaab incursion on its peacekeepers. In May this year, the terrorist group carried out an ambush on a Burundian military base in El Baraf, killing scores of ATMIS soldiers.
