Five Mps Resign from Somalia’s North East Administration
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Five lawmakers from Somalia’s North East administration have announced their resignation from the regional parliament, raising fresh questions about the political direction of the newly established administration.
In a joint statement, the lawmakers said they had decided to resign after what they described as prolonged disagreements over the way the administration was being governed and concerns about its political direction.
They said they had spent considerable time trying to resolve the disagreements internally through dialogue and consultations, but that those efforts had failed to produce an outcome they could accept.
The lawmakers who resigned are Makhtal Said Mohomoud, Ahmed Caabi Hassan, Abdulsalam Abdullahi Mohamed, Sadiq Jama Muse and Ahmed Ali Mohamed.
They said they had formally relinquished their seats in the regional parliament and would provide further details about their decision at a later stage.
The resignations come amid growing political tensions within the North East administration.
Recently, lawmaker Fahiima Yusuf Quuje announced that she had left the administration and joined Somaliland. Her move prompted a political response from the regional authorities, with the parliament taking steps concerning her membership.
It remains unclear whether the five lawmakers who have now resigned will follow a similar path or seek political affiliation elsewhere. They have not said they intend to join Somaliland or any other administration.
The North East administration, established in 2025, is one of Somalia’s newer regional administrations. Its formation has been closely linked to wider political and territorial disputes involving Puntland and Somaliland.
The administration has also faced political and security challenges in parts of the territory it claims, adding to the difficulties of building functioning institutions in an already complex political environment.
The latest resignations could affect the cohesion of the regional parliament and add to questions over the administration’s political stability, particularly as it continues to establish its institutions and consolidate its authority.
However, the significance of the resignations will depend partly on what the lawmakers do next and whether other political figures follow their lead.
The North East administration has yet to issue a detailed public response to the resignations.
