Five Quarry Workers Killed in Suspected al-Shabaab Attack in Kenya’s Mandera County

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MANDERA: Suspected al-Shabaab militants killed five quarry workers in a targeted early morning attack on Tuesday in Bur Abor village, Mandera East, near the Kenya-Somalia border, local officials said.

The victims, all non-local laborers, were working at a quarry site around 7:00 AM when armed assailants stormed the area and carried out the killings.

No group has officially claimed responsibility, but authorities suspect Somalia-based al-Shabaab militants, known for similar attacks in Kenya’s northeastern region.

“This is a deeply troubling event,” said Mohamed Abdiaziz Roble, the village administrator of Bur Abor. “The identities of the victims are being confirmed, and efforts are underway to notify their families.”

The attack has sent shockwaves through the remote community, prompting fears of renewed insecurity and sparking a swift security response. Kenyan security forces were deployed to the scene and have launched investigations.

Roble said the village administration is working closely with local law enforcement to enhance safety and urged residents to report any suspicious activities.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served and that our community is protected,” he added.

Al-Shabaab has previously targeted non-local workers in Mandera, particularly those involved in construction, infrastructure, and quarrying operations, as part of its campaign to destabilize the region.

Authorities have since heightened security across Mandera East and surrounding areas as investigations continue.
