GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The international community has demanded outgoing President Mohamed Farmaajo forgets an extended stay in office and immediately returns to the electoral talks.
Impecable sources told Goobjoog News the C6+ group which brings together the UN, UK, EU, AU and the US told Farmaajo he was alone in the term extension idea affirming earlier positions by some of the donors.
The US, EU and the UK have signaled the imposition of sanctions, aid cuts and re-evaluation of relations with Somalia.
A source said the embattled president was not accompanied by anyone in the meeting according to conditions set out by the C6+ group.
Though there was no official statement from both sides, sources close to the talks noted that the C6+ team made it clear they will no longer be supporting the Federal Government in what could cripple its functioning and adversely affected the country’s recovery process should Farmaajo remain put in office.
The Federal Government is banking on donors to fund 60% of this year’s $680 million budget. Should the respective donors make good their threats, the realization of the budget goals will become a pipe dream.
The developments come amid a fast growing isolation of Farmaajo as clan elders in various parts of the country mull next steps on the ongoing electoral gridlock. Puntland’s Abdullahi Deni met the state clan elders on Thursday followed by a parliamentary meeting the following day which culminated into an overwhelming vote against term extension.
Meanwhile Hawiye clan elders are expected to converge in Mogadishu on Monday in what is likely to result in a consequential position further weakening Farmaajo’s quest for more time in Villa Somalia.
