Former Somaliland President Dies at Age 85
GOOBJOOG NEWS | HARGEISA: Former Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo has passed away at age 85.
Family sources confirmed the passing away of the former leader as the region mourned the loss of one of Somaliland’s most respected statesmen widely credited for laying the foundation for Somaliland’s ongoing progress toward political stability and economic growth.
silanyo, who was born in 1936 served as Somaliland’s 4th President from 2010 to 2017, a tenure marked by significant strides in infrastructure development and economic reforms.
He previously had a long and distinguished career in public service where he was Somalia’s government as Minister of Planning from 1965 to 1973 and as Minister of Commerce from 1973 to 1978.
Silanyo also was a prominent figure in the Somali National Movement (SNM), which played a pivotal role in Somaliland’s quest for independence and self-governance.
During his term as president, he put in place initiatives that enhanced infrastructure, improved public services, and promoted Somaliland’s bid for international recognition.
His legacy is enshrined in Somaliland’s history as a leader who prioritized development and stability in the region.
