The widely respected former Turkey ambassador to Somalia Kani Torun has announced his candidature for Member of Parliament in Turkey.
The career diplomat has been replaced just last year and promoted to be the advisor to Turkey Prime Minister Mr. Ahmet Davutoglu on African Affairs last November.
The news of his candidature to Turkey parliament is well received in Somalia’s political and social circles.
Turkey‘s 24th general election is due to be held on June 7, 2015 to elect 550 new members of the Grand National Assembly.
Kani Torun belongs to the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) which will seek a fourth consecutive term in government. Its leader, Ahmet Davutoğlu, will seek a full term as Prime Minister of Turkey in his own right, having taken over from Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in August 2014.
Mr. Kani Torun was nominated as a Turkish new ambassador to Somalia immediately after H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, visited Somalia on 19 August 2011 accompanied by a delegation, which included members of his family and several members of his Council of Ministers.
During his stay in Somalia, the ambassador had established a permanent diplomatic residence in Mogadishu and made Turkey’s approach in Somalia appear to be well appreciated. Dr. Kani also effectively coordinated Turkish massive humanitarian assistance which included huge number of free scholarships, rebuilding the main Mogadishu roads, restoring hospitals and building schools as well as for training and equipping the Government’s security forces.
