Galmudug bans deforestation in the region
Galmudug state government has banned the cutting of trees and charcoal trading in the region.
A statement from Galmudug’s presidential office said, “That all Galmudug districts were banned from cutting down the trees and burning the forest to get charcoal.”
The presidential palace spokesperson, Mohammed Osman Jawale, told Goobjoog News, “that the aim of banning the cutting of the trees in the region is to prevent drought and conserve the land.”
“The plan would also provide Galmudug people with the opportunity to reduce poverty, to improve food security, to address climate change and to conserve their land.” said the spokesman
Several regions of southern Somalia were declared famine zones by the United Nations, with the deforestation contributing to an extreme drought.
