Galmudug is ready to implement 30% quota for women- Minister
Galmudug State has pledged to actualise the 30% provision for women in political participation in the upcoming legislative elections in Somalia late this year, a deputy minister has said.
Speaking to Goobjoog news, Galmudug’s deputy information minister, Dahir Farah Fiidow said that Galmudug is ready to give the first priority when it comes to the implementation of the constitutionality set 30% seats for women in parliament.
“Our administration is ready guarantee 30% seats for women in the upcoming federal parliament members from Galmudug,” said Fiidow.
“As Somali women have not been given the promised quota in the NCA, they fear a recurrence of this scenario in the new upcoming parliament,” Fiidow said. “As a result, We are fighting to give their 30% slice of the parliament.”
The Garowe Principles, signed by Somali leaders in December 2011 and bolstered in February, stated that 30% of seats in the NCA and the parliament would be reserved for women.
In Somalia, parliamentary seats are allocated using clan-based power sharing system, the 4.5 formula, where equal number of seats in parliament goes to each of the four major Somali clans, while a coalition of minority clans receive half that number.
