Galmudug President to meet with the PM in Galkaio
Galmudug president Abdikarim Hussein Guled has travelled from Adado to Galkaio town to hold meeting with Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid who has also traveled from Garowe to the town in a convoy.
The PM and the Galmudug president have made stopovers separately on the way to address residents on the prospect of peace deal between Galmudug and Puntland brokered by the federal government.
On reaching the town, huge crowds were waiting for Galmudug president; they later filled a local hall to capacity where Abdikarim addressed them.
Puntland and Galmudug
Puntland and Galmudug have been at loggerheads over territorial control and border issues. Galkaio town itself is split into town major parts between the two administrations.
Tensions dates back to 1990s when fierce tribal fighting ravaged the contested Mudug region, but the fighting was put to an end by a historic peace deal signed by former President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed who hailed from Puntland and General Mohamed Farah Aideed from Galmudug . But suspicions and mistrust between the two communities have dragged on for two decades.
Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid was in Garowe holding talks with Puntland president Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gas in apparent attempt to convince him to recognize Galmudug so as to proceed with the federalization process but there is no concrete agreement to that effect.
One of the thorny issues is an article in Galmudug constitution which sets State’s borders inside Puntland territorial borders.
Puntland has also claimed that Galmudug formation is unconstitutional on the basis that the law requires two or more regions can form a new state but now Galmudug is made up of one and half regions.
