Garbaharay DC Refute Torture Reports
The administration of Garbaharay district has denied the emerged reports indicating that its soldiers have tortured and mistreated civilians living in the town.
Garbaharay district commissioner, Iiman Adow Kariye, who spoke to Goiobjoog News said that they are discontented with the demonstrations against Ethiopian army serving under AU mission in Somalia which had been held in Garbaharey town in south of Somalia.
He noted that they have never suppressed the expressions of the public and called the accusations against his administration “groundless accusations”.
“We have no problem with AMISOM troops because they are helping the society, there were few who protested against them, we harmed nobody, the demonstrations were not inclusive, we are sending apology to AMISOM troops over the demonstrations because we are representing the public”
This comes two days after the administration Garbaharay was accused of torturing some of the protestors demonstrating against AMISOM.
On 9th of this month residents of Garbaharey town have protested against AMISOM troops.
The demonstration is linked to local khat trader allegedly killed by AMISOM last Sunday.
Angry locals barricaded the roads with burning tires while demanding answers from AMISOM regarding the death of the trader.
Somalia believes the move is counterproductive and close security cooperation between the neighbours is only way forward to defeat armed group Al Shabaab.
