GOOBJOOG NEWS | GENEVA: Somalia’s health sector gained a significant boost this week as the country hosted its first-ever international forum on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly (WHA78) in Geneva, highlighting growing international confidence and renewed support for Somalia’s healthcare reform efforts.

Organized by Somalia’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the forum convened global health leaders, donors, and international development partners to discuss Somalia’s health priorities and future collaboration. The event marked a milestone in Somalia’s re-emergence as a credible actor in the global health community.

Held under the theme “The Somali Health and Social Welfare Forum: A Global Partnership for Health and Social Development,” the gathering underscored Somalia’s commitment to building a stronger, more equitable health system. Officials said the forum created a critical platform for attracting technical and financial backing at a time when the country is seeking to expand access to essential health services.

“This forum has shown the world that Somalia is serious about transforming its health sector,” said Dr. Ali Haji Adam Abubakar, Minister of Health and Social Welfare. “We are committed to working with partners to build a system that delivers for all Somalis.”

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), praised Somalia’s progress and called for continued international investment. “Somalia has made significant strides. This momentum must be supported to ensure lasting health improvements,” he said.

Health experts say the event elevated Somalia’s health diplomacy and helped position the country to secure increased funding, knowledge exchange, and technical assistance. It also strengthened links between Somalia and global health institutions, including the WHO, World Bank, Gates Foundation, and regional health authorities.

Officials added that follow-up actions from the forum will focus on building resilient health infrastructure, scaling up essential services, and addressing persistent challenges such as maternal health, disease outbreaks, and workforce development.

“This is not just a forum—it’s a catalyst for long-term change in Somalia’s health system,” said Dr. Guuled Abdijalil, Director General of the Health Ministry.
