Ghana plans to deploy 160 police officers to Somalia

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) plans to deploy about 160 additional police officers from Ghana to the mission to help stabilize the Horn of Africa nation.

The AU mission said a delegation from the Ghana police service is on a week-long visit to Somalia to hold deliberations with AMISOM officials regarding the deployment of additional Ghanaian police officers to the country.

“Ghana plans to deploy at least 160 police officers to AMISOM to bolster policing operations in Somalia, within the framework of the Somalia Transition Plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2372 (2017), which call for the downsizing of the military and increment of AMISOM police personnel to 1,040,” the AU mission said in a statement.

The AMISOM is expected to relinquish the security of the key towns to the Somali forces through a conditions-based transition plan, to allow them to take the lead responsibility as part of the planned exit end item

Currently, Ghana has a team of 39 Individual Police Officers serving under the AU Mission in Somalia; a team which has demonstrated exemplary performance as staff officers, trainers, instructors and mentors.

The deployment of more Ghanaian police officers would, therefore, boost further, the performance of the AU Mission.
