Goobjoog agriculture TV show to conclude tomorrow in Mogadishu

The agricultural TV show hosted by Goobjoog TV is finally expected to conclude tomorrow in the capital Mogadishu for the closing ceremony of the show to be celebrated at Jazeera Hotel where the winners of the 11 weeks farming experience will be unveiled.

 The show which was named as Tartan Tacab was a program which was intended to promote and encourage Somali youth into farming and attraction to the agricultural sector which most of them seem to regard as a less valuable industry.

Six groups each made up of five students from six different universities have competed to win the farming competition monitored and judged by a panel of experts in the field and hosted by Goobjoog Business. Each group will have a piece of land provided by its respective university and one season to grow, while the GEEL project will sponsor all other resources and materials needed by the contestants.

The first three groups that perform the best will win a prize. In both television and radio, the program will be aired in the Somali language so that it will reach out to a large number of Somali populations in order to receive extraordinary reactions and its message delivered to the right audience: Somali youth.

Supported and guided by experts along the way, the young farmers have learnt how to make the most of the land they have and attract more and more young people getting into farming as a profitable business, this practical show is timely and very relevant.

The Objectives of the Program

 The main objectives of ‘Tartan Tacab’ are to:

  1. Encourage Somali youth into farming and attraction to the agricultural sector which most of them seem to regard as less valuable
  2. Break the social and emotional barriers of starting an agri-business and to challenge the societal prejudices against
  3. Educate youth on the myriad of opportunities at their disposal to enter into and to grow agricultural economic
The uniqueness of the Program

 Goobjoog Business is Somalia’s first and the only business dedicated media institution in the country, given that Mogadishu alone hosts more than 20 radio stations. This uniqueness gives the Radio and its programs especial attention by the national business environment.

A Brief Description about Consultant, Judges and Monitors

 Judges and monitors are those who evaluate the performance of the contestants. We will make sure that they qualify to be judges and that they have an agriculture background. Each week they will monitor the farm of each group.

While the consultant gives advice and recommendations to the young farmers to unleash their agricultural potentials whether be planning, budgeting and marketing their products in the local markets.

The show included an element of competition between participants which has covered the following topics:

  • Climate-smart agriculture, water management and efficient irrigation
  • Appropriate technology and machinery
  • Soil conservation and land preparation
  • Planting methods and care of growing plants
  • Harvest, storage and value addition
  • Branding and marketing
