Gov’t Has Recruited 6,000 in Two Years, On Course to 12,000 Mark- PM Barre
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Federal Government has recruited and deployed 6,000 trained teachers over the past two years and is working toward hiring 12,000 government-employed teachers by 2026.
In a statement outlining his administration’s education agenda, Prime Minister Hamze Barre said the teachers have been posted across the country, from major cities to remote communities. He added that the government is in the process of reaching 10,000 teachers as an interim milestone before the 2026 target.
Barre also stated that, for the first time in Somalia’s history, teachers’ salaries are being paid entirely from domestic revenues rather than external donor support. He described the move as a reflection of national sovereignty and a sign that the country is investing in its own future.
“Our teachers are no longer overlooked; they are honored as the heartbeat of our country and the builders of tomorrow,” the Prime Minister said, framing the developments as part of a broader effort to strengthen public education.
According to the statement, nearly 250,000 graduates and 200,000 current students are now registered under the national higher education system. The Prime Minister further said the number of candidates sitting the national Grade 12 examination has increased significantly — from 7,000 in previous years to 39,000, including students in Las’anood.
The remarks come amid ongoing government efforts to expand access to education and standardize national examinations across federal member states and contested areas.
