Gulf Cooperation Council Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

Storyline:Unity of Somalia

GOOBJOOG NEWS|RIYADH:

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, describing the move as illegal and a direct violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Secretary-General of the GCC, Jassim Al-Budaiwi, said Israel’s recognition of Somaliland runs contrary to the principles of international law and constitutes interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.

Al-Budaiwi warned that the decision threatens regional stability and risks further destabilizing the Horn of Africa, a region already facing significant political and security challenges.

He reaffirmed the GCC’s long-standing support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, urging the international community to respect international law and avoid actions that undermine peace and stability.

The GCC also stressed that decisions concerning Somalia’s future must reflect the will of the Somali people, emphasizing that political disputes should be resolved through dialogue, consensus and established legal frameworks.

The statement adds to growing regional opposition to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, following similar condemnations by the League of Arab States, Turkey, Egypt and Djibouti, as Somalia’s federal government prepares a formal response to the development.
