HirShabelle state assembly to elect new president today
HirShabelle state assembly will today elect a new president in the state capital Jowahr to replace former leader Abdullahi Ali Osoble who was ousted by the assembly in no confidence vote.
Speaking to Goobjoog News, the deputy state election committee Abukar Hasan Ali said the process was on course and a new leader will be unveiled today.
“Our preparation is wonderfully on the right track. The exercise will start at 10am and will be completed within today however long it will take. Many guests will come from Mogadishu who want to be in the present in the state presidential election including the International Community. Already eight MPs from the federal government are in Jowhar town” said Ali.
The election had been postponed from September 12 to candidates time to present their pre-election plans and manifesto to the public Wednesday and Thursday. “We will ensure the public gets a chance to listen to the candidates before they go to the polls,” state election committee chairperson Mohamed Hussein Yusuf said on Tuesday.
Eight state presidential candidates have been registered so far and none has rescinded his candidacy. “Eight candidates have fulfilled the requirements and no one has withdrawn from the election race.”
Notable among the candidates include former Hiiraan governor Yusuf Ahmed Hagar ‘Dabageed’, and Abdi Farah ‘Laqanyo’. A member of HirShabelle state parliament Abdikarim Ali Noor is also vying for the state top seat.
HirShabelle state assembly is composed on 98 lawmakers who will be casting their vote for the candidates.
Former state president Abdullahi Ali Osoble was ousted last month in a no confidence motion by the state assembly.
