GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOMBASA, Kenya: Hormuud Telecom, Somalia’s largest telecommunications provider, has been named Telecommunications Company of the Year at the AfriSAFE Africa Safety Congress 2025, an event focused on advancing health, safety and environmental standards across the continent.

The congress, held from Nov. 13–14 in Mombasa under the theme “United for a Safer Africa,” brought together regional and international stakeholders to discuss safety and technology-driven development.

Founded in 2002, Hormuud Telecom has grown into Somalia’s dominant telecoms operator, offering nationwide mobile services, enterprise internet and the EVC Plus mobile money platform, which has played a significant role in expanding digital financial access across the country.

AfriSAFE organisers said the award recognises Hormuud’s workplace safety systems, staff training programmes and wider community initiatives. The company was the first private Somali enterprise to secure international ISO certification.

Hormuud also runs the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, which supports education, healthcare, vocational training and humanitarian relief efforts across Somalia.

“We are honoured to receive this award,” Yasin Hassan, the company’s head of corporate affairs, said. “It reflects the commitment of our staff to improving safety and driving innovation in Somalia and across Africa.”

Hormuud has received several international recognitions in recent years linked to connectivity expansion, digital payments and social impact.
