Hormuud Telecom Wins Global Mobile Money Re-Certification

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Hormuud Telecom, Somalia’s largest telecom operator, has been re-certified by the GSMA Mobile Money Certification programme, placing its EVC Plus platform among just ten services worldwide recognised for high standards in security and consumer protection.
Other platforms in the exclusive group include Safaricom’s M-PESA, Vodacom M-PESA and MTN’s MoMo. Hormuud was first certified in 2022 and is the only Somali operator to hold the accreditation.
The GSMA certification, awarded after independent assessments covering fraud prevention, anti-money laundering safeguards and data protection, is considered a global benchmark for mobile money providers.
Hormuud’s CEO Mohamed Farah said the re-certification underscored the platform’s resilience and transparency, adding that “it’s a clear sign that Somalia is open for business.”
The achievement comes as Hormuud expands smartphone use and prepares a nationwide 5G rollout, part of wider efforts to build a cashless economy and strengthen Somalia’s digital infrastructure.
Founded in 2002, Hormuud employs over 12,000 Somalis and remains the country’s largest private sector employer.
