NAIROBI July 16 (Xinhua) — Countries in the Horn of Africa will experience excessive rainfall of up to 200mm a day, with many also registering warmer than usual temperatures, the Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a regional bloc, said on Tuesday.

The ICPAC identified Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan as the affected countries. “More than usual rainfall is expected over central and northwestern Kenya, most parts of Uganda, central to western Ethiopia, central to eastern South Sudan, and western Sudan,” said the ICPAC. The weather agency noted that there is a likelihood of flooding incidents over flood-prone areas in western Sudan, western Ethiopia, and north-central South Sudan. According to ICPAC, warmer than usual temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius would affect parts of Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. The agency added that elevated heat stress levels are expected in northern Sudan, parts of the Red Sea coast, coastal Eritrea and Afar region in Ethiopia.
