Lower House Speaker Lashes Out at Netanyahu Over Somaliland as Parliament Rejects Recognition
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People Aden Madobe has strongly condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his recent decision to recognize Somaliland, describing the move as a direct attack on Somalia’s sovereignty, as Parliament formally passed a resolution rejecting any such recognition.
Speaking during an extraordinary joint session of the two chambers of the Federal Parliament, the Speaker accused Netanyahu of pursuing actions that violate international law and undermine the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The Speaker described the Israeli leader as “a criminal wanted by international courts,” holding him responsible for widespread killings of Palestinian civilians. He further accused Netanyahu of seeking locations around the world to forcibly relocate Palestinians who have survived the ongoing conflict, a move he said runs contrary to international legal and moral standards.
According to the Speaker, Netanyahu’s reported remarks suggesting the recognition of part of Somalia as a separate state for purposes linked to the displacement of Palestinians are unacceptable. He said such statements amount to a blatant assault on Somalia’s independence, territorial integrity, and national dignity.
“These statements are a direct attack on the sovereignty, unity, and honor of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the Speaker said, stressing that Somalia will not allow its territory or political status to be manipulated to serve external agendas.
The Speaker’s remarks came as lawmakers from both houses adopted a binding parliamentary resolution condemning and categorically rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. The resolution reaffirms that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and warns of legal consequences for any individual or institution that violates the country’s unity.
Parliament also directed the Federal Government to immediately notify international and regional bodies, including the United Nations, African Union, and IGAD, of Somalia’s official position, urging them to uphold international law and respect Somalia’s territorial integrity.
The extraordinary session focused entirely on Israel’s actions and their implications for Somalia’s unity, with parliamentary leaders stressing that the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain non-negotiable under any circumstances.
