ICE Shooting in Minneapolis Sparks Protests, Probes and Political Backlash

Storyline:World

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MINNEAPOLIS: The fatal shooting of a woman by a U.S. immigration agent in Minneapolis has triggered protests, competing official accounts and multiple investigations, intensifying tensions over the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

The Department of Homeland Security said the woman, identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, tried to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during an operation on Wednesday morning, prompting an agent to fire in self-defence. Local officials sharply disputed that account.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey accused federal agents of reckless conduct and called for ICE to leave the city, while the city council said Good was assisting neighbours when she was shot. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the state would ensure a full and independent investigation.

Video footage circulating online appears to show agents confronting a woman in an SUV before shots were fired as the vehicle attempted to pull away. Minneapolis police said the woman was blocking a residential street and drove off after being approached by a federal officer. The FBI said it would investigate the incident.

The shooting has become a flashpoint amid a large federal deployment in Minneapolis, where thousands of additional agents have been sent in recent weeks as part of immigration enforcement operations. The move has drawn criticism from city leaders, who say the presence of ICE has heightened fear and unrest rather than improved safety.

Protests erupted across Minneapolis and were being organised in other U.S. cities, with demonstrators demanding accountability and an end to federal immigration raids. Minneapolis public schools cancelled classes for the remainder of the week, citing safety concerns.

The incident has also amplified scrutiny of the administration’s immigration policies, particularly their impact on Minneapolis’s Somali community, which has been a focus of recent enforcement actions. Democrats accused the White House of misrepresenting the events, while President Donald Trump defended ICE agents and blamed what he called hostility toward law enforcement.

The shooting occurred about a mile from where George Floyd was killed in 2020, a location that has heightened the national resonance of the incident and renewed debate over the use of force by authorities.
