GOOBJOOG NEWS | ISTANBUL: Somalia is eyeing new pathways to rebuild and modernise its naval forces following its participation in the International Defense and Military Technology Fair (IDEF 2025) in Istanbul, one of the world’s premier defense expos.

General Abduwahab Abdullahi Omar, Commander of the Somali Navy and Coastal Defense Forces, led the country’s delegation to the fair, where he met with defense industry leaders and explored advanced maritime solutions.

In a key meeting, General Omar held talks with Ahmet Akyol, CEO of Aselsan, Turkey’s top military technology firm. The discussions centered on Somalia’s need for modern coastal surveillance systems, naval equipment, and training partnerships to secure its 3,300-kilometre coastline.

“This visit marks a turning point in Somalia’s efforts to build a capable and professional naval force,” a Somali defense official said. “Engagements like IDEF provide us with critical access to innovation, expertise, and long-term partnerships.”

Somalia has struggled to secure its maritime borders due to decades of conflict, piracy, and limited resources. However, recent reforms and international partnerships, particularly with Turkey, have laid the groundwork for rebuilding its defense institutions.

By attending IDEF 2025, Somali officials said they gained exposure to cutting-edge technologies that could significantly enhance the country’s maritime security and support its broader national defense strategy.
