IDPs in Galkaayo call for cease fire

IDPs have expressed concerned about the recurrent fighting between forces from Galmudug and Puntland states in the central Somali town of Galkayo, which claimed lives of dozens people.

Mohamed Ali Farah who spoke for IDPs in Gaalkaayo said that the fighting had caused unnecessary deaths and suffering to many families in the town.

“The locals are very important in bringing lasting peace to their neighbourhoods and creating a good future for our people. It’s important to maintain the unity of the people in town,” Farah said.

He called on leaders in the states affected to resolve their differences for a common good of the areas, saying the leaders in those areas should unite and ensure that their reconciliation meetings become fruitful for the benefit of their states and whole Somalia.

Galkayo is divided into two zones, where the northern portion forms part of Puntland state, while its southern part is governed by the Galmudug administration.
