GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Monday welcomed Somalia’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, following a sweeping cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre aimed at reinforcing leadership amid rising political and security pressures.

IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu extended his “warm congratulations” to Abdisalam, expressing confidence in deepening regional cooperation through the Council of Ministers.

“We look forward to working closely with H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali to advance our shared goals of peace, security, and integration in the Horn of Africa,” said Dr. Gebeyehu in a statement.

Abdisalam, a seasoned statesman, previously served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Works. He replaces Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, who has been appointed Minister of Defense as part of the government’s leadership overhaul.

Dr. Gebeyehu also paid tribute to the outgoing Foreign Minister, hailing Fiqi’s role in strengthening Somalia’s diplomatic engagement within IGAD.

“His commitment and leadership were instrumental during a critical time for regional diplomacy,” he said, while wishing Fiqi success in his new portfolio.

Fiqi, a former head of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and ex-Minister of Interior, brings a wealth of experience to the defense post, including a stint as Somalia’s Ambassador to Sudan.

Among other notable appointments, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi was named Second Deputy Prime Minister. He has held prior roles as Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Defense.

The reshuffle, observers say, is part of a broader strategy by Prime Minister Barre to solidify political stability and enhance governance in the face of mounting domestic and regional challenges.
