IGAD Ministers Meet in Addis to Tackle Climate Impact and Food Insecurity in Horn of Africa

GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: Agriculture ministers from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) convened in Addis Ababa this week to forge a joint response to the worsening food insecurity and climate-related challenges across the Horn of Africa.

The high-level meeting brought together ministers and development partners to align strategies on strengthening food systems, enhancing climate resilience, and improving regional coordination amid growing environmental and humanitarian pressures.

Somalia’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed A. Hayir Maareeye, emphasized the urgency of collective action.

“Our region is at a tipping point. The climate crisis, compounded by conflict and disasters, demands a unified, regional approach,” he said.

He outlined Somalia’s national efforts to rebuild its agricultural sector, reduce hunger, and stabilize rural economies, while reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to regional collaboration under IGAD.

The summit concluded with a shared resolve to scale up investments in sustainable agriculture, improve early warning systems, and integrate climate adaptation into food security planning—moves seen as essential for safeguarding millions across the drought- and flood-prone region.
