IGAD Reaffirms Somalia’s Unity, Says Israeli Move Undermines Regional Stability

GOOBJOOG NEWS|DJIBOUTI: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has weighed in on Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland, reaffirming that Somalia remains a sovereign member state whose unity and territorial integrity are protected under international law.

In a statement issued by its Secretariat, IGAD said it had taken note of recent developments in the Horn of Africa, including Israel’s announcement, and stressed that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland runs counter to established international and regional legal frameworks.

The regional bloc underlined that Somalia’s sovereignty and borders are fully recognized under the Charter of the United Nations, the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and the agreement establishing IGAD. It warned that actions taken outside these frameworks undermine collective commitments to peace and stability in the region.

IGAD also called on international partners and stakeholders to uphold international law and to support dialogue and political processes that promote cooperation and long-term stability in the Horn of Africa.

The Secretariat reiterated its solidarity with the government and people of the Federal Republic of Somalia, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive political processes and regional cooperation aimed at securing lasting peace and prosperity for Somalia and the wider IGAD region.

The statement adds to a growing list of regional and international responses pushing back against Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, as diplomatic tensions over the move continue to unfold.
