IGAD states praise Somalia’s counter-terrorism efforts
GOOBJOOG NEWS | DJIBUOTI: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states have praised the efforts made by the Federal Government of Somalia in its fight against the Al-shabaab militants.
During the IGAD meeting held in Djibouti, the leaders supported the efforts by Somalia to lift the current arms embargo which they said had hampered the ability of the Somali Forces to effectively deal with the Al-shabaab threat.
The leaders also resolved to reorganize the administrative structure of the IGAD bloc to enable an equal chairing by one of the member states on an annual rotational basis.
They also suggested that the Deputy Secretary General of IGAD should be a Somali, appointed by the Federal Government of Somalia, while Mr. Workneh Gebeyehu, who is the current Secretary of IGAD, has been extended for a period of 4 years.
The IGAD leaders called on the International Community to give financial and political support to the Federal Government of Somalia in implementing the decisions reached by the National Consultative Council of Somalia.
They also appealed to the parties to the conflict in Las’anod to stop the fighting as soon as possible and to resolve their differences through dialogue.
