IGAD to Honour Climate Journalism at Addis Ababa Awards

GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: IGAD and the Government of Ethiopia will host the 3rd IGAD Media Awards in Addis Ababa on November 29–30, an event aimed at promoting climate journalism and resilience across the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Nebiyat Getachew and Abebaw Bihonegn, Head of the IGAD Mission to Ethiopia, said preparations are in their final stages. The awards will spotlight journalists whose reporting raises public awareness on climate change and supports community-led solutions in a region heavily affected by droughts, floods and environmental shocks.

Bihonegn said around 400 journalists from across Africa will compete in eight categories covering TV, radio, print and digital media, with an additional award for Best Female Journalist. He said the initiative is designed to encourage reporting that informs the public while shaping policy responses among IGAD member states.

Getachew said Ethiopia’s selection as host aligns with its investment in green development. He noted that Ethiopia’s upcoming role as host of COP32 reflects the impact of its Green Legacy Initiative, a tree-planting programme championed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Between 2,000 and 2,500 participants, including journalists, regional officials, innovators and development partners, are expected to attend. IGAD says the awards will help elevate climate issues in public debate and strengthen people-to-people engagement across the Horn of Africa.
