IGAD Welcomes Sudan’s Return, Says Move a Boost to Regional Unity

GOOBJOOG NEWS|DJIBOUTI: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Monday welcomed Sudan’s decision to resume full participation in the regional bloc, saying the move would strengthen cooperation and efforts to address shared challenges in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement issued from Djibouti, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu said Sudan’s return reaffirmed regional solidarity and a collective commitment to peace and stability.

He said Sudan, a founding member of the organisation, would enhance IGAD’s capacity to pursue common political, security and development priorities.“The renewed engagement of Sudan strengthens IGAD’s unity and ability to act on regional priorities,” the statement said.

Gebeyehu praised Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who chairs IGAD, for what he described as his leadership and role in guiding dialogue and consensus among member states during the process.IGAD said it stood ready to work closely with Sudan to support peaceful solutions to the country’s ongoing challenges and to promote a secure and prosperous future for the Sudanese people and the wider region.

Sudan’s return comes as regional leaders seek to reinvigorate diplomatic efforts to address conflict and instability that have affected parts of East Africa and the Horn.
