GOOBJOOG NEWS | WASHINGTON: US Representative Ilhan Omar has won a fifth term in Congress, securing re-election in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District and extending her representation of the Minneapolis area for another two years.

Unofficial results published by the Minnesota Secretary of State showed Omar winning 76.45 per cent of the vote, with 99.54 per cent of precincts reporting. She defeated Republican challenger John Nagel and independent candidate DeVelle L. Jackson.

Omar, a Democrat, was first elected to Congress in 2018, becoming the first Somali American and one of the first Muslim women to serve in the US House of Representatives. Her victory marks another electoral success for a politician who has become a prominent voice in national debates on immigration, foreign policy, civil rights and social justice.

Born in Somalia, Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee with her family before settling in Minneapolis, home to one of the largest Somali communities in the country. Before entering Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, where she represented a Minneapolis-area district.

During her time in Washington, Omar has emerged as a prominent progressive Democrat and a frequent critic of President Donald Trump’s policies, particularly on immigration, foreign affairs and the treatment of minority communities.

Her re-election comes amid political tensions with the Trump administration and an ongoing federal investigation into allegations concerning her immigration history. Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the investigation as politically motivated.

Her latest victory ensures she will return to Congress as Democrats seek to strengthen their position in Washington following the midterm elections.
